I guess i really should be doing a summary of the day but i can’t bring myself to write something coherent enough, so here i will leave you all with something that touched me very deeply.
Today we held the second meeting of MSA, and it didnt go as smoothly as we had planned, but I am still proud of every individual that had showed up willing to learn and support MSA.
So during our ice breaker activity, we had all anonymously slipped a piece of paper with a thought that bothered us about ourselves into a balloon. After blowing them up, we tossed them to the middle of the room to exchange balloons. One by one we popped our balloons to find the words that had conflicted others and reflected upon it with advise. When it came around to me, i held this piece of paper in my hands.
It reads “Being bullied by others because I wear hijab”.
Coming from the school I do, it’s pretty small, and so are all the other schools on the MLK campus. My school seems to be friendly and accepting towards one another, mainly because we all know each other, so sort of did not expect this. I’m not sure if this came from someone within my school or another from the campus, but it upset me to read it.
Many people that attended today had to leave before i got to share my balloon, and hopefully this come across to anyone who needs it, i hope these words help.
Wearing the hijab is something that comes from within an individual. If this is you, don’t ever front who you are to please others. This is much easier said than done, but it’s key and leads to building a stronger person.
I also though it was ironic that I was the one to come across this issue. My further in dept advice came from a post i had read previously yesterday off tumblr [click for original post] where a muslim journalist was questioned about her hijab, and why she wore something that did not match her intelligence. Sister Laurette’s reply was “Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times”
In my Opinion, the culture we are in is seeming to look like it’s going retrospective, and if you are able to embrace traditions and what you believe, spite how time is racing around you, you hold one of the greatest power in conserving yourself.
